Video Set Lists - Bar/Club

In 2010, Ambient DJ unleashed its move into music video mixing. This move was largely inspired by appreciating the huge entertainment value from a video dance party set at past International Disc Jockey Expos in Atlantic City, where we enjoyed surreal sets by the likes of VJ Rooney G and DVDJ Unique. I have also followed with great interest the activities of VJ Tom Laroc, currently based out of Miami, and who practices his craft at a very high level. Ambient DJ stocks a collection of over 5,000 music videos, but listed below are some of the current favorites separated by genre.

For those of you seeking to kick off your Memorial Day Weekend right, come on out to Brewsters Lounge in East Windsor, NJ on Friday night, May 28, 2010, to enjoy a video dance party with myself, VJ Jagged, along with my partner in crime, Ambient DJ mixologist DJ Iron Mike!

Bloomberg Corporate Gala

This evening, Ambient DJ had the pleasure of providing music and audio-visual services for the Bloomberg's Skillman, NJ campus at its annual Employee Awards event. This was our second year working the event. Whereas last year's theme was the Rainforest, this year's theme was beach and boardwalk.

We were engaged by Eggsotic Events (www.eggsoticevents.com), operated by the talented designer Egils Matisse and his wife Shelley. Team Eggsotic transformed Bloomberg's business offices into a magical environment full of sandcastles, beach balls, lobster traps and blue skies! In addition, Eggsotic provided various other lighting effects, including uplighting.

Ambient DJ covered three zones:

1) The auditorium, where the Awards ceremony was held. Specifically, we provided sound inside the auditorium, as well as a satellite speaker for the office area outside of the auditorium. In addition to providing wireless mics for the three presenters, we played theme-based songs as winners were announced;

2) Cafeteria. DJ Spinz had a dedicated DJ booth where he spun a variety of beach-themed music, and well as his dancefloor staples! It was hard for Chris to concentrate with the nearby food stations full of fragrant high-end seafood!

3) Main stage under the tent - Egils built a marvelous stage and backdrop, where I set up my DJ booth. I backlit my Facied facade with alternating blue and green Chauvet Rain 56 LED par cans. Surf videos featuring big wave riding in exotic locales were run on a big screen using rear projection. To the dancefoor itself, I applied the American DJ H20 effect, producing a shimmering aquatic surface. Throughout the evening, I spun a mixure of Beach Boys, Dick Dale, Springsteen, reggae, soca, calypso and steel drums.. followed by contemporay pop and club artists such as Rihanna and Lady Gaga for dancing. The hottest dance set of the evening was a Latin set, which even drew some of the service staff to the floor!

Importantly, the high-profile Awards show flowed smoothly, with no glitches. Bloomberg's employees enjoyed the pursuant party action. I spontaneously added an Employee Award for Best Dancer, which went to Mr. Don Huff, who was the first to hit the dancefloor and the last to leave!

Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Awards Dinner

This evening I had the pleasure of DJing the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Awards banquet. Students and faculty from both the Piscataway and Camden campuses were in attendance. Congratulations to the students for their upcoming commencement! The banquet was held this year at the Westin at Forrestal Village in Princeton, NJ. Former locations for the event include The Imperia in Somerset, and the Hyatt, New Brunswick. This was my sixth year in a row to play music for this fine event!

I provided music for the outdoors cocktail hour (what a beautiful day it was), and for the dinner banquet in the Westin's largest ballroom. For the numerous awards, I played short excerpts as guests walked up to collect their prize, sticking primarily to classical and movie themes. During dinner, I played the Dean's and professors' preferred Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble and Chris Botti, as well as some piano music. Once dessert was completed, the lights were dimmed and I quickly built up a dancefloor. Key tracks included Nothin' on You (B.o.B.), Snake Charmer (DJ Rekha mix), Carry Out (Timbaland & Timberlake), and You are the Best Thing (Ray LaMontagne).

Importantly, I debuted my new Facied facade. This product is a four-panel facade with white lycra paneling that can be backlit using LED par cans, for a dazzling, South Beach-style effect! (see photos below). I backlit the Facied in alternating blue and red, and then used uplighting for the back wall, using blue. For more information about the Facied facade, visit Steve Cie's blog at http://www.stevecie.com/blog/?tag=facied The crafstmanship is amazing, and Steve Cie will treat you right!

Cranbury School Drug Free Fair

On Saturday May 8, 2010, I had the pleasure of DJing/Emceeing the 20th Annual Drug Free Fair at the Cranbury School. The theme this year was "iTune Out Drugs." The mission of the Drug Free Fair is "to extend the health education of the students of Cranbury School beyond the classroom, and into the larger community by providing them with a social/educational opportunity to engage in activities and dialog about healthy, safe and 'Drug Free' living."

I awoke to overcast skies and while driving over, it started to rain. The organizers decided to wait out the rain, and amazingly it cleared up and turned into a beautiful sunny day. Hundreds of town residents came out to support this great cause. The Committee did a great job organzing a variety of fun and educational events. Some of the exhibitors and activities:

(1) Helicopter landing by the U.S. National Guard. Then the kids were able to look inside the cockpit of this sleek bird;

(2) Impaired driving simulator (licensed and permitted drivers were able to drive golf carts while wearing goggles);

(3) Mercer County Sheriffs Office - offering gun lock safety information, and the Middesex County Sheriffs Office offering child fingerprinting;

(4) Appearance by Miss New Jersey 2009, Ashley Shaffer (http://www.missnewjersey.net) , who was signing autographs at the Fitness Zone (of East Windsor) stand (http://www.njg-fitnesszone.com).

(5) Vintage T-Shirt modeling show - kids wore shirts from prior year's Drug Free fairs. I Emceed the show, reading the themes of prior years. Miss New Jersey modeled the 2010 shirt!

(6) Appearance by Cranbury Volunteer Fire and First Aid squad, where they showed the "Jaws of Life" used to extricate drivers from accidents (often caused by drugs and alcohol);

(7) Huge rock climbing wall brought out by the National Guard;

(8) Appearance by Princeton High School cheerleaders who performed some cheers!

(9) Live band performance by a duo that included a Cranbury School teacher, Sean Cox, who played a relaxing set of acoustic rock covers such as done by the Goo Goo Dolls. As the DJ, I spun a variety of upbeat pop, disco and dance music, with a few line dances thrown in for good measure;

(10) Custom bead-bracelet booth operated by the Cranbury School PTO;

(11) For the grand finale, East Coast Martial Arts Institute of East Windsor (http://www.ecmai.com) had numerous star students perform various feats of agility and strength. For the grand finale, Jason Reilly kicked through a thick stack of wooden boards, and then punched through a cinderblock!

Those guests who gathered the requisite information received free t-shirts.

The big takeaway from this event was that drugs and alcohol ruin lives. While playing a Michael Jackson track, I thought to myself, "what a shame" that this talented artist was taken out of his prime. Drugs and alcohol can suck you in and pull you down slowly, and it's hard to escape once you're in their grasp. I hope that this lesson was not lost on the youth in attendance at yesterday's Drug Free Fair.
