In our consumer-driven and materialistic society, sometimes we lose sight of the meaning of the holidays. About a spirit of community and giving. For the past eleven years, K&B Tattooing in Hightstown, NJ has been spearheading the Toys 4 Kids toy drive for local underprivileged children. This dedication by K&B and its manager Joe "Mac" McEneany culminated in the donation of over 1,100 toys in 2009. That's a lot of smiles!
The 2010 Toys 4 Kids program held a party on Sunday December 5th at Tavern on the Lake on Main Street in Hightstown. Attendees were asked to bring at least one unwrapped toy. In return, they enjoyed a delicious meal provided by Tavern, a visit from Santa Claus (delivered via the Hightstown Fire Company), and music provided by DJ Brett Gash. Brett is a friend and colleague of mine who has been involved with the toy drive program since its inception.
I attended the event with my sons Zach and Max. The day before, I took Zachary toy shopping at Target and explained to him the concept of a toy drive. On Sunday, he was very happy to place our donated toys in the Santa's sack! Door prizes donated by local businesses were also up for grabs via the purchase of tickets which were then drawn at random from a bag. Included on the prize table was a pair of size 8 Ugz boots!
The final count of donated toys for 2010 is not yet in, but I'm sure that it is a huge number. Please keep this event in mind for 2011, as it is for a great cause, the people involved are great, and the party is a lot of fun!
